Shining a UV light on . . . Caterpillars
During the lockdowns in 2020, a friend and I starting looking for caterpillars at night in Toronto's High Park. This eventually turned into the High Park Caterpillar Survey with an expanded pool of volunteers. Using ultraviolet flashlights, we go out after sunset looking for caterpillars, many species of which fluoresce when UV light in shined on them. A typical session is three hours long. To date, we have found around 115 species.
The survey runs from late May to early October each year and we are always looking for new volunteers! You can visit the High Park Caterpillar Survey website here.

A poster I created in May, 2023 to highlight some of the species we have found and photographed during the survey.
The actual size is 11" x 17". I had prints made so I could give a copy to each volunteer as a token of thanks for their efforts.
