Shining a light on . . . Moths
In 2016, I founded the High Park Moth Study to record the diversity and abundance of moths in Toronto's High Park. Weather permitting, we meet at least once a week from May to late Sept/early Oct to survey for moths. Being keen naturalists, we are also interested in the other creatures attracted to our lights, including beetles, wasps, flies, true bugs, and lots more. Our long-term goal is to record 1,000 species of moths for High Park. * We were featured on the front page of the Toronto Star on Saturday, Aug 24, 2019. * The study has been on hiatus since the end of the 2020 season. On July 8, 2020, we reached our goal of 1,000 species. The total currently stands at 1081 species.

Occasionally we receive observations from others, such as when we were told about this Polyphemus moth that got tangled in a mist net set up by researchers conducting a bat survey in High Park in 2016. This was the first record of this species for our study (since then, we have had this species come to our lights on several occasions). |
